Start with a list. Quarterbacks with the most playoff passing yards in NFL history. You’ll see the names you expect: Montana, Elway, Favre, Rodgers, Roethlisberger. Patrick Mahomes is already on it at 30. Peyton Manning sits second with 7,339. And then there’s Tom Brady at 13,400. Almost double the second-best total in the history of the sport.

That’s one stat. The touchdown version is the same picture: 88, and the closest anyone has come is Mahomes at 46. Put it another way: his playoff passing yards alone are more than Mahomes, Josh Allen and Joe Burrow have thrown for in the playoffs combined. So are his playoff touchdowns (88 to their 84).

Every other sport has a two-name argument. Jordan or LeBron. Messi or Ronaldo. The NFL got one name and a thirty-year argument about second, and I’m not going to relitigate it. What I want to do is measure the distance. We scored 53 major NFL records for how far out of reach each one is, then ranked players by the records they hold. Brady holds 17 outright and scores 7.5. Jerry Rice, the only other player in range, scores 3.2. Brady is first under every version of the model, including the one where rings and MVPs don’t count at all.

So here’s the deal. The boring records first, then the playoffs, then the ones I’d bet my life on, then the honest part about what he did to everyone else, and finally what it actually takes, per season, to catch him. It gets sillier as it goes.
